Whether you’re searching for primary tillage tools to break compaction and bury residue, or secondary implements to finish and refine your seedbed, our comprehensive auction listings have the equipment that meets every operation’s needs.
Implement Type & Application: Tillage equipment falls into two broad categories: primary and secondary. Primary implements include; chisel plows, disc rippers, and moldboard plows for breaking and loosening compacted soil and bury heavy residue. Secondary implements include field cultivators, harrows, rollers, and cultipackers — refine the seedbed and firm the soil surface. Know which stage of preparation you need before selecting a machine.
Working Width : Working width directly determines how many acres per hour you can cover. Match the implement’s width to your tractor’s horsepower. Oversizing an implement for your tractor leads to poor depth control and excessive wear, while undersizing wastes time and fuel. Most implements are available in a range of widths from 10 feet to over 60 feet for large-scale operations.
Condition of Wear Parts: Blades, discs, sweeps, shovels, and tines are the primary wear items on any tillage implement. Inspect for cracking, uneven wear, and proper thickness. Worn components deliver inconsistent tillage depth and poor residue sizing. Replacing a full set of blades or shanks can be a significant cost, so factor the condition of wear parts directly into your offer.
Frame & Folding Mechanism: On wider implements, the folding mechanism is critical. Inspect all hinges, hydraulic cylinders, and locking pins for wear, leaks, and proper alignment. A frame that doesn’t fold squarely or lock securely is a safety issue and can indicate deeper structural fatigue from heavy use or impact.
Depth Control & Adjustment: Consistent tillage depth is essential for uniform seedbed quality and yield potential. Check that depth wheels, gang angle adjustments, and hydraulic down-pressure systems function properly across the full width of the implement. Machines that can’t hold consistent depth across varied terrain will create uneven planting conditions that affect the entire crop.
Brand & Parts Availability: Major brands like John Deere, Case IH, Kuhn, and Great Plains carry strong parts networks and resale value. On used equipment from smaller manufacturers, verify that replacement wear parts are still in production and readily available. An implement that is difficult to source parts for can become a liability quickly during the planting season when every day counts.
