What to Look for When Buying a Used Forklift

Whether you’re sourcing a single machine for a small operation or adding to a fleet, these are the key factors to evaluate:

Lift Capacity — Every forklift has a rated capacity at a specific load center (typically 24″). Know the maximum weight and load dimensions you’ll need to handle.

Fuel Type — Electric forklifts offer lower long-term operating costs and zero indoor emissions but require charging infrastructure. Propane and diesel machines offer faster refueling and are better suited for outdoor or multi-shift operations without spare battery packs.

Mast Type & Lift Height — Standard masts, full free lift (FFL) masts, and triple-stage masts each serve different applications. Know the clear height of your storage facility and your maximum required lift height before buying a machine.

Hour Meter Reading — Like mileage on a vehicle, hours indicate usage. A forklift with 5,000–8,000 hours on a quality brand may still have significant life remaining if well-maintained.

Tires — Cushion tires are designed for smooth warehouse floors, while pneumatic tires are best for outdoor terrain.
