Raised on a horse ranch, Stephen developed a strong work ethic and deep connection to the land at an early age. He farmed hay and trained horses in his youth before earning his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University. After college, he spent over a decade managing real assets for a large manufacturing company, where he oversaw timber, water infrastructure, environmental compliance, and risk management. He then earned his law degree at Emory University and practiced real estate and transactional law in Colorado for nearly ten years.

Stephen later shifted from law into brokerage to work more directly with the land and help clients see their real estate goals through from start to finish. As both a licensed broker and attorney, he pairs an owner’s eye for what a property actually is with an instinct, sharpened by years of legal training, for spotting complications before they surface. Clients feel it in how the transaction moves: fewer surprises, fewer scrambles, and the quiet confidence that comes from working with someone who saw it coming. Water rights, access, easements, mineral history, and zoning get worked through early, and a listing gets prepared, not just priced. Stephen does not scale his effort to the size of the deal; some of the most complicated transactions are the smaller ones, and the discipline built on one deal is what serves the next.

That preparation happens in the field as much as at a desk. Stephen has invested in the tools that let him show a property properly, including a side-by-side to reach and cover ground most agents can only point to from a truck window, and the mapping and imagery to put boundaries, water, and access in clear view on site. And on the rare property that calls for expertise beyond his own, he draws on strong relationships across Hayden’s broader bench to bring in the right specialist and serve the client fully.

Stephen makes his home in Colorado with his wife and two children and spends significant time in Wyoming, where he is licensed and connected through family. Stephen’s focus is equestrian properties, mountain land and residences, and the recreational ground that supports a life spent outdoors, the same categories that shaped his own background and interests. Outside of work, he is a skilled horseman, private pilot, wilderness first responder, ice climber, and certified rock climbing guide, with more than 25 years of technical mountain experience and ascents up to 5.13 across the Rockies. It is the same preparation and judgment under real stakes that shape how he works for clients.

We relocated from California to Boulder. Stephen came highly recommended from a friend. And he proved to be every bit as good as the friend said. We had particular priorities that we shared with Stephen and shared with him several options we saw online. Stephen viewed those properties in addition to others he found that he tought met our needs. As a result, we were able to have a focused, productive house hunting trip. There were some questions about the property we wanted to buy. Stephen coordinated bringing an engineer and inspector to answer our questions. He also liaised with the seller and their agent. In short, he went above and beyond for which we are extremely grateful. Overall, this was a pretty smooth transaction made possible by Stephen.
