Property Description
Cornerstone Elk Ranch
After spending my entire life chasing big bull elk out West, whether guiding or filming outdoor TV, this is the best elk ranch for its size I have ever hunted. Nestled in southwest Colorado just below Horsefly Peak on the Montrose/Ouray County line—only 45 minutes from the Montrose/ Telluride airport—the 1,300-acre property is a hunter’s paradise boasting outstanding views and is unique in terms of the sheer quality and quality of elk and mule deer. As this video shows, large elk herds frequent the property. The ranch is in Unit 62 but is only a rifle shot away from the coveted Game Management Unit (GMU) 61 known for trophy-class bulls and bucks that takes 15-plus points to draw and accounts for one of the largest elk herds statewide. In Unit 62, elk tags are generally available over the counter. My wife and I have archery hunted the property for years in exchange for guiding the owners and their associates during the rifle seasons. We’ve taken numerous 6X6 bulls and one 7X8 that scored 373 B&C and some nice bucks as the area also is known for quality mule deer.
A unique aspect of this property is that it was divided from a $100-plus-million-dollar golf course development so you enjoy convenient access through an electronic gate where you drive on maintained, paved roads to within a short distance of the prime hunting areas and property boundaries. It is bordered on the west by more than 16,000 private acres with little hunting pressure and to the east by the Cornerstone Golf Course, which spans more than 4,000 acres and is not hunted.
