The North Fork Gunnison River (locally known as the North Fork) is a tributary of the Gunnison River, approximately 25 miles long, in southwestern Colorado. It drains part of the southwestern flank of the Elk Mountains northeast of Delta. It is formed in the mountains of northwestern Gunnison County and follows along State Highway 133 on the south side of McClure Pass. It descends to the southwestern through a widening valley past Somerset, Paonia, and Hotchkiss. The North Fork joins the Gunnison River in eastern Delta County, just downstream from the famous Black Canyon. The valley of the river, called the North Fork Valley, has a temperate climate that has historically been a center of fruit growing in southwestern Colorado.

This healthy river is home to a large number of German Brown and native Rainbow Trout. Trout in this section average 14-20 inches with fish over 2 feet long always lurking in the shadows. Perhaps one of the most prolific and anticipated insect hatches in the country occurs in the on the N. Fork of the Gunnison and Gunnison Rivers. The Giant Salmonfly hatch normally occurs in June when the water temperature rises to about 50 degrees. The hatch begins at the confluence with the North Fork and moves upstream. If timed correctly, dry-fly fishing with Stoneflies and Stimulators is about as much fun as one can have!
