Joes Valley Reservoir, located on the eastern slope of the Wasatch Plateau, is a 1,200 acre lake set attractively 7,000 feet up in the forests of the Manti-La Sal Mountains. The lake is just 13 miles west of Orangeville, Utah on SR 29 ( Straight Canyon) in Emery County. This is a fairly large scenic reservoir that is one of Utahs premier sport fisheries. The reservoir contains some of Utahs largest trophy splake and is stocked with tiger trout, cutthroats, rainbows and tiger muskie.
Above the lake at higher altitudes, above 8,000 feet, there are mountains, meadows and smaller lakes and streams. There are many unmarked, secluded camping sites available in the mountains on Forest Service ground a few miles above the reservoir. There is access to Skyline Drive and a number of smaller area ponds and reservoirs in the immediate area.
This area offers world-class hunting, fishing, bouldering and ice climbing.
Summer Recreation: Boating, fishing, water skiing, personal watercraft, hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, mountain biking, motorcycle trails and ATV trails are popular at the lake.
Winter sports: When the weather turns cold and snow begins to pile up head for Joe's Valley. Snowmobiling, backcountry skiing, ice climbing and ice fishing around the reservoir will provide hours of enjoyment.
Joes Valley Marina, provides a boat launch ramp, dock, C-Store with fishing and camping supplies. There is a full-service kitchen, and dinning room. The area around the store could easily support group accommodations and rental cabins. This is the only boat ramp on the lake, and this is the only commercial enterprise on the entire lake.
Fishing is the primary activity, however, boating,
camping, swimming, nordic skiing and snowmobiling are
also thoroughly enjoyed. Fishing is generally very good
with excellent ice fishing in the winter. Key Species of fish are splake, rainbow trout, tiger trout, and cutthroat trout. to the reservoir. The
reservoir is nestled in a north/south valley with relatively
steep terrain on the east and west slopes. It is a beautiful
area and generally receives moderately heavy usage with
heavy use on holiday weekends.
The reservoir
provides fishing for rainbow, cutthroat, splake, brown and
lake trout. The DWR stocks the reservoir annually with
catchable albino trout and
fingerling rainbow splakerout (Salvelinus fontinalis X Salvelinus fontinalis), and Tiger Muskie.(
Two camping areas are located at the reservoir.
Near the boat ramp is a trailer camping area with 17 sites
available. Fire rings, standing grills, tables and vault rest
rooms are located outside the parking area with parking
for boat trailers in the area. There are no electrical
hookups or dump station present, but dump stations are
available at Castle Dale. Two campgrounds (46 site and
18 site) are located in one general area on the west side
of the reservoir. Single and multiply family units are
provided. Fire rings, standing grills, tables, vault toilets,
water and asphalt pads are available. Some of the sites
are under the MISTIX Reservation System and
reservations are recommended on holidays and
weekends.
Several fisherman parking areas and rest room
facilities are located at convenient places around the lake.
Another favorite activity in the area is boldering.A fairly recent addition to the canyon of nationally recognized Utah climbing areas, Joes Valley bursts with hundreds of routes on gorgeous sandstone boulders. Joes attracts bouldering enthusiasts from around the world to try their skills on some of the valley's classic problems. With sandy landings, bomb-proof holds, and gorgeous surroundings, you'll find enough prime rock to push your climbing to a new level.
This venue has rapidly risen through the ranks of North America’s best and most visited bouldering areas. Huge quantities of blocks litter the hillside (not all of them climbed on) containing literally hundreds of awesome problems, via cracks, walls, prows and roofs.
